August 9, 1946: “Sis and I went to the Stratford and saw Notorious Lone Wolf and Phantom Thief. Real good.”
Two, pretty obscure, 1946 films. Notorious Lone Wolf starred Gerald Mohr, and was part of a long-running series. Mohr played the “Lone Wolf” in nine films during the 1930s and 40s. The character was a reformed jewel thief who would always sacrifice his own ambitions to help a lady in distress. Eric Blore played Jamison, his light-fingered valet.
Phantom Thief features the famous Boston Blackie character, star of at least 23 movies, including silents. It must have indeed been really good, because Dot was seeing it for the second time within a week.
I can't find any YouTube clips of either film, but I was able to locate the lobby card above (courtesy of Photobucket).
